Doctoral Thesis

Summary

My doctoral thesis sought to help parents at Covenant Church cultivate spiritual practices in the home during the week while preparing for corporate worship with the church on Sunday. The timeless theological truth (the “golden thread”) woven throughout my thesis is that engaging God’s story nurtures faith. My desire was to help build a bridge between church and home through worship.

Title

Implementing a Lectionary-based Resource for Households during the Season after Pentecost at Covenant Church: A Bridge between Church and Home through Worship

Abstract

To help parents at Covenant Church engage God’s story, I provided eleven participants with a lectionary-based resource that was used in the home for five weeks during the season after Pentecost. Data from surveys, interviews, and focus groups revealed an increase in the participants’ conviction that they are the primary agents of faith formation in their children and growth in their understanding of the vital relationship between the church and home. Participants also experienced unity as a family as well as increased prayer, biblical literacy, and spiritual conversations as a result of regular spiritual practices in the home.
